This is the tenth in a series of verse-by-verse expositions of the book of 1 John. This message was delivered at Hillcrest Baptist Church on the evening of March 30, 2014. This message deals with the confidence and boldness that a Christian  should have, and never have to be ashamed. This post contains an audio recording of my message, along with my sermon notes. Please note that the sermon notes are not a full transcript.

SERMON NOTES:

1 John 2:28-29

v.28:
This verse makes the transition from concern about false teachers to concern for the children of God.

The faith that John had previously described, the one the we have heard from the beginning, brings confidence and unashamedness.

“Confidence” is one of John’s favorite words to describe the freedom and boldness that belong to the Christian before God in prayer.

1 John 3:21

1 John 5:14

When we cling to true faith in Jesus Christ, we have a confidence in which we will not be ashamed.

Those who don’t have faith in Christ will be ashamed at His coming, and there will be no excuses.

Mark 8:38

Those of faith will know no shame.

Romans 1:16

2 Timothy 2:15

v.29:
Confidence and unashamedness (boldness) through the Holy Spirit will allow us to practice righteousness; thereby proving our salvation.

The little book of 1 John provides a treasure trove of “proofs” that demonstrate the reality of the change brought about by the new birth.

Here is a short list of proofs we experience:

  • True Change will bring Obedience to God’s commandments

1 John 2:2-5

  • True change will have us to Experience God in our lives.

1 John 2:13-14

  • True change will give us the Ability to recognize the “antichrists” in the world.

1 John 2:18

  • True change will enable us to Recognize how the world is ignorant of Christianity.

1 John 3:1

  • True change will allow us to Recognize the sinners’ ignorance of righteousness.

1 John 3:6

  • True change will be evident by Our love for fellow Christians.

1 John 3:16-18

  • True change will bring The indwelling Holy Spirit.

1 John 4:13

  • True change will be seen by Our love for godly behavior.

1 John 5:2

These evidences are for the believer.

They are intended to assure the believer’s heart and mind of his security in Christ.

This list is not intended to be complete but simply to focus our thoughts on the obvious.

The visible proof of being a Christian is right behavior.

The child exhibits the parent’s character because he shares the parent’s nature.

A person’s righteousness is the evidence of his new birth, not the cause of it.

Many people do good deeds but don’t have faith in Jesus Christ.

Others claim to have faith but rarely produce good deeds.

A deficit in either faith or right behavior will be a cause for shame when Christ returns.

Because true faith always results in good deeds, those who claim to have faith and who consistently do what is right are true believers.

Good deeds cannot produce salvation, but they are necessary proof that true faith is actually present .

James 2:14-17
