The Age of the Earth

Why does the age of the earth matter? Isn’t it just a side issue? Isn’t belief in Jesus Christ the most important issue? These are the questions that people ask whenever the topic comes up. The truth is, how you view this issue affects how you view Christ and the issue of salvation. they are all tied together. At this point, it may be helpful to read my previous article “When a Day was a Day.” https://blog.itsgodsword.org/2010/01/when-day-was-day.html

Now, understanding that each day of creation was a literal day, Scripture tells us that Adam and Eve were created on the sixth day.

Genesis 1:26–31 (NKJV)
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.
30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Knowing that they were created on day six, we would then ask when that was. Believe it or not, the Bible gives us everything we need to calculate a timeframe.

Most people tend to skip over the genealogies, because they tend to be dry reading; however, they are there for a reason, and they are important. You see, evolution’s magic ingredient is time. If you give a frog enough time, he will turn into a prince (so say the evolutionists), but the Bible portrays things much differently. This is where people begin to have a problems, and this is where your thinking may be challenged.

If you look at Genesis chapters 5 and 11, you will notice genealogies. Genesis chapter 5 records from Adam to Shem, and Genesis chapter 11 records from Shem to Abraham. If you look at these genealogies, you will notice that there are a specific number of years from one descendant to the next, and a unbroken chain is created. One needs only to add the dates to establish the amount of time between Adam and Abraham. If you add them up, you come up with a total of 1946 years. So, if Adam was created on day 6, then Abraham was born 1946 years after the creation. Remember, you can’t use the argument here that there are gaps in the genealogies, because the Biblical text provides an unbroken chain between Adam and Abraham.

Next, it is well established that Jesus lived about 2000 years ago. Knowing this, all we need is the length of time between Jesus and Abraham. Matthew 1:1-17 lists 42 generations between Abraham and Christ. It is true that Matthew’s genealogy contains a few gaps, but they can be filled in by referring to 1 Chronicles 3:11-12. Luke 3:23-38 records 55 generations between Abraham and Christ. Matthew and Luke follow two different family lines. Matthew records Joseph’s lineage, while Luke records Mary’s. Here, the calculations become less precise. With the number of generations between Abraham and Christ, we can establish between 2000 and 2500 years. This gives us a creation date of approximately 6000 years ago.

Some people are stuck on millions of years, because that is what they have been taught all their lives. They try to insert generational gaps between Abraham and the flood, but by that time people were having children at 30-35 years of age. At that rate,it would take over 250 missing generations to add up to even 10,000 years, let alone millions. the genealogies are accurate, and can be trusted.

Jesus, Himself, reaffirms this timeline, by affirming the literal days of creation.

Mark 10:6 (NKJV)
6 But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’

Jesus says that Adam and Eve were made at the beginning of creation. Six days into a 6000 year creation could definitely be considered the beginning. However, Adam and Eve being created about 3 billion years into a 4.5 billion year old earth (per evolutionists) is hardly the beginning. So, would you say that Jesus was lying, or simply mistaken? I am not willing to say that either.

Remember these important considerations: 6000 years ago God created the Heaven and the Earth, 4400 years ago there was a flood. Everything began anew after the flood.

As we look at some scientific evidence, keep this in mind: Imagine that you are scuba diving, and you happen upon a shipwreck. Inside the ship you find a treasure chest. You decide to take the chest to the surface so you can see what is inside, As you open the chest, you see that it is full of coins. As you pull the coins out, you notice the date on them. The coins all have dates from the 1830’s. You immediately conclude that the ship sank sometime in the early 1800’s, after the 1830’s. Then, as you retrieve the last coin in the box, you notice that it has a date of 1956. You now know, despite the hundreds of coins from the 1830’s, that the ship could not have sank before 1956. All of the other coins become meaningless, the youngest coin in the box invalidates them all.

For those who are still skeptical, consider these scientific evidences:

  1. Oldest tree, a Bristle Cone Pine, 4300 years old
  2. The oldest reef, the Great Barrier Reef, 4200 years old
  3. The Sahara desert is expanding at a rate of approximately 4 miles per year. Based on this rate of expansion, it could not be more than 4000 years old.
  4. The earth’s rotation is slowing down. At is current rate of decline, billions of years ago the earth would have been spinning too fast to support life.
  5. The earth’s magnetic field is declining. As few as 25,000 years ago, the earth would have been unable to support life, due to the heat of the electric current.
  6. There are simply not enough people for humans to have been around about 3 million years or so. With an average population growth of 1.7% per year, the 8 people from the ark, 4400 years ago, could easily produce the current 6 billion population.
  7. Comets lose debris with every orbit around the sun. Comets are estimated to have a life span of less than 10,000 years (100-200 orbits around the sun). If the universe is billions of years old, why do we still have comets?
  8. The moon is receding from the earth. A few million years ago, the moon would have been so close that the tides would have drowned everything on earth, twice a day. (It’s impossible to drown more than once a day.)
  9. There’s not enough salt in the sea for billions of years.
  10. The sun is losing about 5 million tons of mass per year. At that rate, a few billion years ago, the sun would have been so big that the increased gravity would have pulled the earth right in.
  11. There have been many instances where man made objects have been found inside lumps of coal. This proves that coal does not take millions of years to form, and that man was around before the coal formed.
  12. Oil deposits are under enormous pressure. The pressure is so great that the earth’s crust could not contain it for more than a few thousand years. Plus, we now know from laboratory experiments that oil can be formed very quickly.
  13. Stalactites, several inches long, have been found growing off of electrical conduits.Either the conduit has been there for hundreds of thousands of years, or stalactites form much faster than what is commonly taught.

Science does not dictate that the earth is billions of years old, evolution does. the Bible gives us the correct means by which to interpret the scientific evidence. True science will always confirm the Bible. Better yet, the Bible will always confirm true science.
